"I am a general contractor and we have been using Structural Pier Tech (SPT) for a few years now. Since working with SPT, we no longer use concrete pier footings for our projects as helical piers are just flat-out superior. The whole crew at SPT has been wonderful to work with when we schedule a project, I never worry if they will show up, I never worry that it will not be done correctly, and they provide me with all the documentation we need to obtain our permits, they are quick to respond and offer consultation on our upcoming projects and to top it off, they have fair pricing as well. Their equipment is in great shape, they come to the job site prepared and are professional. If you need helical pier work completed, do not hesitate to contact SPTech.
The Downside to Concrete Footings for Decks in Minnesota
-
Site Preparation
Requires extensive labor for digging footing holes, digging tears up yard/landscaping and have to deal with dirt spoils.
Using helical piers for deck footings means very little disturbance to soil, yard and landscaping, are installed in a short amount of time, and you can begin building your deck immediately once helical piers are installed.
-
Frost Line
It can be difficult to dig below the frost line when property slopes, retaining walls and other topography/landscaping challenges exist for cement footings.
Helical piers can be installed much deeper and easily go below the frost line year round, creating a more stable and secure deck footing.
-
Cure Times/Inspections
Cement footings require inspections after footings are poured, and then again after the deck is finished. This process can take several days.
Decks built with helical piers only require one inspection, and that is when the project is finished.
-
High Water Levels
If the water level is high, it can complicate digging and pouring (holes repeatedly fill with water and must be completely dry before pouring footings).
High water levels can affect the footing integrity and stability long term.
Helical piers are not susceptible to high water level issues.
-
Deficient soil/concrete
Cement used in deck footings needs to be rated for lifting (accommodate heaving), and often isn't. This can create structural issues as the deck ages.
Helical piers have a measurable torque reading, and most helical pier projects exceed torque requirements by a substantial amount, which ensures long term stability and reliability.
